Going to a gym for the first time, especially a giant rec center, is like going to a party sober. Everyone else is farther along and you have no idea what you're doing. Luckily, a gym rat friend of mine took me under his wing and showed me the ropes.

I know slightly more about the gym than I do about working on cars. Change the fluids, check loose wiring, fuses, brake pads, and that's about it. But in both cases, I have to start somewhere. I read this last week about Baja Bugs, and has me seriously considering purchasing one in a year or so. It's simple (no radiator!), somewhat efficient, and ton of fun (if Raph is to be believed). I want to take the first step towards being able to not just keep my car alive, but thrive.

On a related note, my buddy buys and sells E30s and just finished his new car, a 325e with a new head, cams, and manual swap (hello, 12 pounds of boost). Just thought that was awesome.
