I’ve been using AdBlock Plus for ages (Sorry, Gawker Univision) but, recently, I started getting these annoying Taboola ads on Jalopnik and elsewhere despite ABP. I tried blocking the element, but it just came back. So then I thought I had some sort of virus. No, it turns out that ABP is actually the one letting the Taboola ads through to my browser. It seems odd that a program that was designed to block ads would be pushing them, but I think it has something to do with the pushback from websites who need the ad revenue, along with ABP’s desire to figure out what an acceptable ad might look like. If you’re interested in the whole thing, you can read ABP’s take on it here. It also explains how to block the Taboola ads if you are using ABP.
