At my last job, there was someone who parked in our garage who always kept their car under a cover. Out of respect, I always resisted the urge to peek a look under the cover, but judging from the boxiness, I always assumed it was something like an 80s Merc.

Anyway, I’m not sure how I feel about it. On the one hand, it must be nice to not have your car covered in exhaust fumes and I’m sure the cover provides at least some protection from dings and scratches.

On the other hand, like parking across multiple spaces, I feel like it’s never productive to bring more attention to your car if your goal is to avoid vandalism. I mean, some people are just assholes, and just knowing that someone cares about their car is enough to trigger them. Plus, I suspect most people won’t be able to resist lifting the cover to see what’s so important that it gets parked under a cover.

I don’t think I’d do it, personally, but I was thinking about it. Right now I’m parking on the top floor of a parking garage, so I have shades up to avoid sun damage, but a cover would certainly be better and make life easier.

I spend far too much time agonizing over protecting a car with a rock-bottom KBB value.
