So, uh, this is awkward, but...I'm actually a bit scared of fifth gear.

Not the show with Tiffany Dell, but like...the gear.

As in, I learned how to drive a stick because racecar, and all I ever really use there is third and fourth. The last racecar was a four-speed, so hey, problem solved.

My biggest fear before the TWS race that I was supposed to drive in wasn't other drivers, wasn't spinning the car or anything of the sort—nope, it was that every time I drove the track in video game form, I was hitting fifth on the NASCAR oval, and holy crap, I was messin' that up in the game, too. What the heck? I thought that part of the stick was just there for decoration. I don't know how to actually use it. I miss the Type 3!

Nope, fifth gear is that mystery gear that I rarely need to use. I don't have a manual daily driver, so I can't even lazily switch into it on the way to work in the mornings.

Worst of all, when I am stuck with the task of trying to get into fifth, my shifts into and out of fifth gear suck. Badly. They're not smooth, they take too much time and I completely miss where things are supposed to go.

So, now you know. I suck at driving a manual. I suppose I'll get over it eventually. I'll get a manual daily driver, practice more and get used to it. Heck, that's what happened with driving around on public roads. I borrowed a friend's Miata for a little while, and voila—I'm no longer completely afraid of that whole "what do I do with a stop light?" thing.

In the meantime, though...I suck at finding and using fifth gear. Now you know.
