Time for....no, not funny green hats and all that.

Time for a, or rather the, Vought v-173, or Flying Pancake to its friends.


It was intended as a small prototype for a short take off aircraft. Two 80 bhp engines buried in the wing provided the power while the gearboxes attached thereto provided the vibration which initially plagued the plane. Just the one was built and managed 190 flights before being retired in 1947. The full size development, the Vought XF5U, was not proceeded with as jet engines had arrived.

Before you ask, the pilot entered and exited via a door on the underside.
