Gave up trying to find a car that fitted the bill, so have a train. A Type 253 HST or Inter City 125 as used in the western parts of the UK in a 2+7 configuration, two locomotives and seven carriages. When introduced in the 1970s as a stop gap until the Advanced Passenger Train was put into service it was the fastest diesel train in the world, with a maximum of 143 mph recorded on a prototype. Subsequently a passenger carrying one has achieved 144 mph.

Thirty five odd years since they were built 194 of the 197 locomotives remain in service and achieve speeds of nominally 125 mph in normal running and rather more on occasion.

The APT that was supposed to replace it was abandoned leaving the HST as one of the most successful British rail designs.
