I while back, I read a Kurt Vonnegut essay that lamented the transformation of Armistice Day, which stood for an international commitment to recognize the horror of war (World War I) into Veteran’s Day, which lacked the sense of mourning of our loss of brave men and women.

Let us remember those who have been lost with the proper perspective on the sacrifice of young men and women who are certainly more brave than I could ever hope to be. Those who are in command must ensure their courage is never spent without necessity.
