Icon is apparently known for making very narrow helmets, and oh boy was this the case here. It fit great... But putting it on and off was a monumental task. And it’s big. Reeeeal big. My XL shares the same exterior bucket size as the 2- and 3XL versions. Heavy too, at least for a sporty bucket. It caught wind like crazy and made my neck sore. Oh, and it was tricky to make glasses work, even after cutting out some foam.

Enter Scorpion’s flag(ish)ship carbon lid.

Significantly lighter, and a bit smaller in exterior dimensions. Riding on the scooter I was very surprised to find that my top speed increased after changing out helmets! No more soreness either. If unsprung mass is king, and rotating mass is emperor... I guess on-head mass would be God..?

Still has a drop down sun visor like the icon, although now I’ve got pinlock compatible shields for anti-fogging. Glasses fit completely normal with the new lid too. Oh and the air bladder system to tighten the pads around your face? Genius.

Only real complaint is the noise level, but now that it’s not such a squeeze to put on, I can probably wear my earbuds.

Unfortunately the color choices were black, and black with ugly grey pinstriping. I ordered some reflective stuff to apply for better visibility.

So yes, I’m now riding around in a carbon fiber sports bucket on my flaming Stella Scooter. Or if the mood strikes, grabbing the Icon for a Satanic Iron Man cosplay. Oddly enough it’s middle-aged women who seem yo be taking the most pictures at stop lights.

I took a Monster 1200 out for a test ride today. Update: still in love.

I half-seriously asked about getting to ride a V2. The salesman (saleskid?) said sure, come back when it’s dry and a bit warmer. Looking forward to that...

Still need to hop on a Ninja 400. I’m hoping it can win my heart, as it’s undoubtedly the smartest choice of the Italian, German, and Austrian bikes I’ve been looking at...
