The driving experiences vary pretty wildly, and yes, I acknowledge that SMG is not ideal, but it's also not as bad as people make it out to be.

The three pedal M5 offers a much more connected drive, but the most striking parallel was drawn after driving an E39 right after driving the manual E60. The v8 in the E39 feels so much stronger, because it has way better low end torque, something BMW has remedied in the new M5 quite well.
