Are you ready?

Every 4 seconds when off throttle, I’ll hear a *click* from under the hood, almost as if something’s opening up, followed by a slight spike in RPM’s (300ish) and an equally small surge in boost pressure. But it apparently doesn’t happen when the car is cold?

Tachometer reads 1000 RPM too low. If it says I’m at 4000rpm, I’m actually at 5000rpm. Not a huge deal since it’s consistently 1k over, but it does bug me. On the Miata I could just open up the cluster, pull the needle off and realign it. The Volvo... No clue. I’m kinda scared to start removing interior pieces, for reasons I’ll get to below.

I’m at idle right now

HVAC panel has some burnt out bulbs. Volvo’s HVAC is quite different from what I’m used to in Japanese and domestic makes, so not being able to see everything at night actually makes it a bit tricky to adjust the heat to my liking.

Seat heaters don’t work! They’re getting power, so presumably there’s something wrong with the heating elements. Interior was swapped over from an 850r so maybe there are some compatibility issues? After looking under the seat I almost had a heart attack due to the number of wires and electrical boxes. I genuinely believe there are more electrical doo-dads under each seat than there are in my entire Miata.

The stereo is pretty bad. There’s an aftermarket headunit—double din touchscreen nastiness—that is somehow new enough to have android auto/Apple car play, yet doesn’t support Bluetooth. I’m shocked that thoseotwo things can overlap. I hate wires all over, so the headunit will not be staying in the Volvo long-term. There’s also an aftermarket amp that I’ve barely even glanced at, a cheap sub in the back that’s not working for whatever reason, some aftermarket speakers up front that don’t sound particularly great, and I’m almost positive none of the speakers in the back or the dash speakers are connected. Verdict: sound system needs a complete overhaul.

Traction control and ABS don’t work. Probably. Both lights turn on and off frequently, and the PO said he didn’t think they were working because of that. Not too worried. Brakes deal great and I definitely haven’t approached the limits of them yet. If I DO end up locking up the brakes around a corner I’ll just get oversteer. I like oversteer. I’m comfortable with oversteer. Understeer is what worries me. As far as traction control.... Well. I definitely need a careful application of throttle and clutch to avoid spinning tires in the first three gears on rainy days, but that’s not the end of the world. Driving aids don’t interest me, so if it wasn’t for the annoying dash lights this wouldn’t bother me. I do have a box that reads “control unit ABS” and another unnamed box in my parts bin so maybe I could fix this...?

If I turn the key too far in the ignition, half the electronics won’t work. Like headlights, HVAC, etc. It’s a common problem, and all you have to do is turn the key back an 1/8 of a turn or so. Easy enough. Although it was terrifying the first time when I couldn’t get lights on and had no idea why. I can replace the ignition, but it sounds like the problem doesn’t really get worse so it’s not really a big deal. I’ll just continue to avoid turning the key too far.

Rev hang! Good god. Maybe I’m just spoiled by the Miata, but this thing has as much rev hang as any boosted Subaru I’ve ever driven. I’m getting used to it, but where on the Miata I’d just ever so slightly blip the throttle on downshifts, with the Volvo I have to throttle down and hold it for like 1.5 seconds. This isn’t exactly a racecar, but I would still like revs to climb and drop quite a bit faster. Lighter flywheel..?

Leather steering wheel is in bad shape. This bothers me because overall the rest of the interior is beautiful.

There are a couple places where the dash doesn’t fit quite right. Not really sure how to fix this, but it’s bugging me quite a bit. Maybe careful use of a heat gun?

Headlight wipers are missing!!!!

Driver side door has a decent sized dent. The black paint makes it less noticeable than it would be otherwise, but I would like to get it fixed. PO was talking about paint less dent removal. No clue if that will work but someday I’ll get that taken care of.

Paint is in bad shape. Clearcoat is faded in places, lots of swirls, decent amount of scratches. Not a priority, but a repaint would be nice someday.

One corner marker light housing is a bit loose. It’s not going anywhere, but it’s noticeably not flush with the bumper.

Wheels rub at 90% full-lock or greater. This is a problem because this wagon has a worse turning radius than a battleship. I could do a figure 8 with the Miata in the space it would take to turn the Volvo around.

And... I think that’s it! Sounds like a lot when written out, but almost none of it matters when you’re in the driver’s seat hearing that 5-cylinder rumble while swaddled in the finest leathers and Alcantara. I love this thing.
