For the love of cars is back for another series on channel 4 (available to watch now on 4oD).

Series two episode 1 looks at buying and restoring an Aston Martin DBS but rather than keeping it original they doing the original offered upgrade and paint it not the original colour the car left the factory in and take a risk on the interior. Really worth a watch.

They find an original 3 speed automatic unloved in a barn and buy it. After the usual gory findings of many an old used car a lot of dents, dings and rot is found after blasting the body back to metal. Rather than going for originality they carry out the Aston Martin offered upgrade of a five speed manual gearbox with Webber Carbs making the car more powerful and more a performance drivers cars. The colour changed from original to James Bond green and the interior changed for a risky, but really well paid off, ox blood colour leather.

The barn buy was £37,000 but went under the hammer at a record breaking £150,000 at Coys Auction.

There is always going to be the debate between keeping it original factory original spec or changing it. But this really paid off for them.

I’d love a Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider America but know that finding one in white with wire wheels and red leather interior is almost not going to happen but if I had the money for the car, would I buy another B24 Spider America and change it. I don’t know, I really don’t know what I’d do.
