On this day in 1836 a few dozen Texians gathered together in Washington, Tx. to declare independence from Mexico. Just days later the Alamo fell and hundreds more were killed in Goliad. Those defeats gave rise to the famous battle cry, "Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!" at the Battle of San Jacinto where we finally defeated Gen. Santa Ana and earned our independence.

The Republic of Texas was a sovereign nation from 1836 until 1845 when it joined the Union as the 28th state. But that maverick attitude still lives on in many Texans today. As author John Steinbeck once said, "Texas is a state of mind."

Happy Independence Day to my fellow Texan Opponauts!

And just to keep it Oppo, here're some folks who have a little too much Texas pride (though, there can never be too much Texas pride) who aren't afraid to show it on their vehicles. ^_^
