The creator of Playboy magazine got his start in journalism while enlisted in the U.S. Army. Hef enlisted after graduating high school in 1944 and served as an infantry clerk during World War II. While stationed at Camp Adair and Camp Pickett, Hefner drew cartoons for Army newspapers until he was discharged in 1946.

Hefner's publications continue to be read by Armed Service personnel throughout its ranks
