Absolutely tragic.

At the start of the Thursday evening rush hour, an 18-year-old in what’s been described as a black 2014 McLaren (I guess an MP4-12C or 650S) got on the I-805 freeway HOV lane IN THE WRONG DIRECTION and reached 100MPH before hitting several cars and killing himself and a mother and her 12-year-old daughter in a Hyundai SUV. In all, 8 vehicles were reported to be involved in the accident, and at least 2 burned to the ground. The freeway was closed until late last night.

I work right by the crash site and commute on that stretch of road daily. The on-ramps to the HOV lanes can be a little confusing, especially since they are located in a different place than the normal on-ramps. I think the McLaren driver probably got on the freeway at this spot.

The ramps are long and pretty straight as they ascend to freeway level, giving plenty of time to accelerate before you reach the flow of traffic. Below are screenshots from Google Maps Street View.

Right: On-ramp to 805 South HOV Lane. Left: Off-ramp from 805 North HOV Lane, where I suspect the McLaren driver entered. It’s likely no other cars were coming down this ramp because this is an employment center rather than a residential area, and it was afternoon rush hour. On that long straight ramp, he could have easily reached 100 mph.

Based on the above, I suspected this was an extremely reckless accident. Then I read that earlier in the day, the McLaren reportedly crashed through a gate at a local elementary school parking lot, vandalized the school building, and sped away. Now I am wondering if this was intentional.

Be safe out there, Oppo.
