I was a little surprised yesterday when my boss came over and announced that she was working on reviews and would be observing us in action. Uh oh. I think that any good employee should have a little insecurity; it’s the ones that feel safe and beyond criticism that start to slack off and are suddenly less useful than they once may have been.

I did get a chance to take a quick look at a couple of pages of the evaluation form and saw nothing but check marks in the far left column, so that’s a good sign. There were also some comments about a few errors from other shifts that I caught, saving us from stranding a few customers in the middle of nowhere for several hours when they should have been transported in no more than 15 minutes. The graveyard shift does a lot of the preparatory paperwork for the next day, and the guy does a pretty good job, but not a perfect job. I live by the motto ‘Trust, but verify’, and although it may look like I don’t have faith in my co-workers, if a problem occurs on my watch I will be held responsible so I had best make sure everything is configured properly.

There may be other stuff, some negative, on other pages of the evaluation, but so far everything looks good. I know I’m not perfect, so times like this are a good time to find out where improvements can be made. Who knows if this will lead to more money, but I did get an increase at the beginning of the year so I’m not going to hold my breath. A little extra would be nice as I save up for a down payment on a house. I just learned today that my sister just moved into a new house a couple of weeks ago, but it looks like my budget will be about $1.2M less than she paid for her place...
