I use an external hard drive extensively at work. Recently I switched from a 5-year-old WD Passport 1TB to a brand new Toshiba Canvio 2TB. I’ve noticed a significant difference in response time between old and new when I go to access it after it sitting for a bit.

Old and fast.

The Passport would respond right away to me clicking on any particular folder. The Canvio feels like it has to wake up and think for a few seconds before it lets me into a folder I haven’t just been in.

New and slow.

Both are USB 3.0 and plugged into a USB 3.0 compatible port on my laptop.

It’s a very minor inconvenience, but I was just curious why the newer one would be slower to react.

EDIT: I think it’s a [stupid] power saving issue. I still have the old Passport so I plugged it in and let it sit for a while. Even after sitting, I can still feel it humming away, while the Canvio is perfectly still until I try to open something.
