Snowy owl is not impressed.

A few months ago, there were rumors that Lego would be making a buildable Hedwig set for the Harry Potter line. You might not know this, but I have a bit of an obsession with owls. So naturally, I was excited by the idea of having a big Lego snowy owl model. Well, Lego just revealed it, and OH LORD HAVE MERCY.

That... that face... It’s so pointy... Owls’ faces aren’t freaking 90 degree angles! They are a little bit pointy, yes, but only a LITTLE BIT. Right angle = wrong angle. This just looks wrong, like uncanny valley this-is-freaking-me-out wrong. Owl eyes should not be looking in two different directions!!! Now, credit where credit is due, this is a mechanical model of a snowy owl and has wings that flap when you turn a crank, which is a cool feature I wasn’t expecting, and for a mechanical model it’s impressively detailed. They managed to capture the snowy owl’s plumage surprisingly well., and the wings look believable enough. I like automata models and kinetic sculptures and whatnot, so I’ll be interested to see how the mechanism works. That said, the mechanical aspect of it meant that they had to make compromises, some of which make the bird look... awkward from some angles.
