Like Aloha Milkyway, I'm a big fan of the E60. I've now had it 6 months, three of which were spent getting pretty much a total engine rebuild (buy the warranty, kids!), and I'm still completely smitten, even though I don't like the grey interior as much as the black ones, don't like the light silver as much as the darker colors and metallics, and the fact that I'm averaging about 18.5 MPG.
I'd argue that it's the single most influential design of the last decade. I wasn't crazy about it when I first saw it back in 2003, although I did say at the time that it had the most elegant bodyside section I could think of. Fast-forward 10 years, and there I am buying one. It's still damn fine-looking, and now that I know a lot more than I did 10 years ago, I get why they did so many of the things that I didn't understand then. Even the headlights make sense. BMW was just way ahead of upcoming regulations, and it took everyone else years to catch up. And too few cars out there have an unbroken line from headlight to taillight, which I think goes a long, long way to making a car look elegant.
I used to appreciate it. Now I'm getting pretty damn close to loving it.
Thanks for listening.
