Lotto tickets

For thanksgiving, we go to the inlaws. They have a tradition where they give out a lotto tickets to guests. Maybe you win maybe you don’t whatever. Usually at the end of the scratching, someone will say just take it to a store. They can scan it and tell you right away if you won.

My question is... if store is selling lotto tickets, can they not scan the ticket and know which is the winning one and just... keep it to themselves?

I was wondering about that and my guess is that the ticket can only be scanned once. Any subsequent scans would be invalid so no one can cash it more than once.

Is that how it works? Anyone?
