It left the factory without AC. OEM AC parts are made of unobtanium. As I see it I’ve got 3 options: 1. Pay someone too much money, 2. Cobble something together, 3. Cooled seats with thermoelectric peltier elements. What would you do? And why?

Option 1 is out as it will be too expensive.

Option 2: cobble something together

The main parts are:

  • Compressor
  • Drier
  • Expansion valve
  • plumbing
  • Condenser
  • Evaporator

As I see it the compressor, drier, expansion valve and the plumbing can be solved with mostly junkyard parts from other cars. The condenser will be solvable as well I guess. Adding an on/off button and thermostat and whatnot should be possible too. That evaporator though, that one worries me. Where/how to mount it? It has to be a perfect under dash fit inside the air tubing.

Looking at original drawings I find these two pictures:

With AC (probably mirrored due to LHD/RHD)

To give you an image of the whole unit (without AC), see the pictures in this Ebay listing.

Other than the not model specific thermostat I can’t get the parts from the second picture. Still though, this seems to be what I have to emulate. Do I just buy a unit like the Ebay listing above and shove an evaporator in there somewhere?

Option 3: cooled (and heated) seats with thermoelectric peltier elements

As an alternative to AC I was thinking of doing this:

I don’t have leather and I do have an oversized alternator and battery, so it should work?

Any ideas? Preferences, pros and cons? Am I overlooking something? I’d love to hear everything!
