Hi all. My mother-in-law asked me to see if I could find her a cable modem she could buy so she does not have to keep renting the one from Time Warner. They raised her rate by $1.50/month and which is straw that broke the camel’s back for her.

Anyway, I don’t know anything about cable modems and whether she needs a specific type to replace the one she has. She uses is solely for internet access - no cable, no phone service. A stand alone WIFI router is the only thing attached to it. The one Time Warner provided is a SURFboard SB5101 but it seems that this model is no longer available.

I don’t know which of these specs are important. My understanding is some routers offer built in WIFI and other features. I think she needs just the most basic cable modem there is. Is there different protocols or whatever, like mobile phone services that I need to be aware of so I get the right one? What about Time Warner - is the Time Warner specific requirements for their service?

She is looking for cheap with no frills. I’d love some specific model suggestions that are comparable.

Thanks 0pponauts.
