My son had a regimen of exercises he has to do this summer to prepare for the fall soccer season (he’s the goalie). So, to encourage him, my wife and I are doing the exercises with him. This morning was legs:

  • 20 squats
  • 30 lunges
  • 40 calf raises
  • 50 second wall sit
  • 100 jumping jacks
  • 50 second wall sit
  • 30 leg raises
  • 50 second wall sit
  • 20 squats

The wall sits are a bitch, as are the leg raises. And I can’t manage 100 jumping jacks. But I’m amazed at how even non-impacting exercises like squats can get my heart rate up. Tonight, it’s arms:

  • 20 push ups
  • 20 triangle push ups
  • 40 air punches
  • 20 simultaneous arm lifts (these are surprisingly tiring)
  • 20 push ups
  • 20 triangle pushups
  • 20 tricep dips

When I started, I could manage maybe 5 push ups. Now I can get more than 10 at a time. Baby steps.

And the plyometrics are a particular bitch:

  • 20 squat jumps
  • 20 side lunges
  • 20 standing broad jumps
  • 20 parallel squats
  • 20 zig zag jumps with balanced step
  • 20 double broad jump
  • 20 2nd-stair jumps
  • 20 tuck jumps
