The exhaust in question is a GReddy SP, a slightly freer flowing catback design based off of the stock exhaust for the MR2; I had no idea when it was last cleaned, so last weekend I decided to bite the bullet. Here's my finished result:

Here's what I started with:

Aside from being incredibly dirty, it also had a fair amount of over-spray, thanks to a few previous owners, and possibly the lazy bastards that painted my car in 2013.

Getting the car up the ramps wasn't too bad, since I had my BRZ buddy spotting, and once it was up there I started by fully washing the muffler and exhaust with soap and water, and giving it a good rinse. Afterwards, I got to buffing the exhaust down with some fine steel wool with soap and water, which was slowly but surely removing any paint. After I'd stripped it fully, I followed up with some metal polish and gave it a nice buffing.

It has its fair share of bumps and bruises, but it polished up really well. For a multiple decades old exhaust, it's not doing too badly at all. It's going to definitely get dirty again, with as much as I drive my car, but at least now it will wipe down with a wet sponge.

In other news, I have put 5000 miles onto the MR2 since March 20th. Somebody want to sell me a commuter?
