Ever wanted to drive at Daytona in an ALMS GT car? Well, as part of the Z4 GTE's launch today, BMW's giving you the next best thing. EDIT: No, they're not. I should watch the videos before I post these things. It's the old M3 in the video here. They also ran the Z4 today, but apparently only filmed the M3. The stuff about the Z4 GTE below is all still true though.
BMW's new Z4 based GTE racer, the aptly named Z4 GTE is a modified version of the Z4 GT3, most notably features a less extreme aerodynamic package and a more extreme engine package. Unlike any production Z4 (but like the GT3 challenger on which it's based), it's powered by a 4.4 liter V8.
Rahal-Letterman Lannigan has entered two of these racers in the 2013 American Le Mans Series, with both running for the GT championship against the likes of Corvette Racing, Team SRT, Risi Competizione, Alex Job Racing, Extreme Speed Motorsports and Team Falken Tires. Manufacturers with cars entered in the class include Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette, SRT Viper and, with any luck, Aston Martin. The first car, 55, will be driven by Bill Auberlin and Maxime Martin, while the second car will be driven by Dirk Muller and, depending on whether or not Hand has DTM conflicts on a given weekend, either Joey Hand or John Edwards. The team's two endurance drivers are Uwe Alzen and Jorg Muller.
