If you ever drove an hour or so down I-44 southwest of St Louis you might have seen signs for “Bob’s Gasoline Alley”, along with a whole lot of big gas station signs on the other side of a field from the highway. It was a roadside museum near Cuba, MO, with a large collection of Route 66 gas station memorabilia.
I go past there regularly. A while back I realized the signs were disappearing, and I even ended up on the highway next to a trailer hauling some of them. Then I saw the Bob’s Gasoline Alley sign had a new note about an auction. It turns out Bob died earlier this year. Everything went up for auction.
The bits of the business visible from the highway are vanishing more and more, and soon it will just be a memory of something I used to see.
