[Los Angeles Times] In potentially-depressing-flashback to Meigs Field news, the City Council of Santa Monica unanimously voted to develop a plan to reduce the Santa Monica Municipal Airport runway from 5000 ft to 3000 ft and to place restrictions on businesses at the airport, such as fuel services and flight schools. However, agreements for grant money from the Federal Aviation Administration mandate that the airport must operate as usual until 2023.

The City is considering paying back that grant money, but the FAA argues there is no legal way to back out of these grant agreements. The FAA has fought back all previous attempts for Santa Monica to restrict airport access and use, including as recently as last month.
