In this photo provided by NASA and taken on April 12, 2016, an Air Force Test Pilot School Northrop T-38C Talon passes in front of the sun at supersonic speed, creating shockwaves that are caught photographically for use in aerodynamic research. NASA is using a modern version of schlieren photography, a 150-year-old German photography technique that helps researchers visualize supersonic flow phenomena using full-scale aircraft in flight. The results will be used to help engineers to design a quieter supersonic transport.
