Replaced the belts on the wife’s Impreza today, pictured here is the tool they loaned me, what a piece of crap. First attempt placed the stretch belt on the front of the crank pulley and halfway onto the AC pulley, which isn’t what I needed. Second attempt I made a bracket to force the belt into alignment on the AC pulley. This was a better attempt and only 1 rib was out of place. I was able to apply enough pressure to the belt that manually cranking the engine caused the belt to jump into the correct groove. I think the gates tool would have worked much better than the rental I had.
Oh well, at least the job got done, if we were to buy a 2nd Subaru I think I’d invest in the correct tool.
