The crux of the issue is that the various Dealer Associations around the nation does not want Tesla going around their cartels and depriving them of an opportunity to charge you for unnecessary services and other fees (Upcharges for an SVT Raptor anyone?). I imagine most of us would live happily with factory-owned stores who's viability would rest on the overall success of the given car company.
