Let’s talk about road trips.

It has been almost one year and 10,000 miles since I bought my Boxster. But when I first got it I was concerned that I would not be able to use it for road trips due to the two small trunks and I did not know how comfortable it would be for long stretches. I am fortunately that I have another car (a Corolla) that I use for commuting and could use for road trips but that we not what I had in mind when I started looking for a car. Since then I have taken the Boxster on road trips all over the south east and am pleased to say that is as good a GT car as it is a sports car.

Most of the 10,000 miles I have put on the car have been for road trips. Maybe 10% was for commutes and trips around town. While it can be fun to take it to dinner and is great fun to drive on country roads it is perfectly comfortable on long highway trips. Heat and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, powerful AC/heater, and the thick roof make sure that the cabin is comfortable. The ride is quite different than a soft luxury car but it does not beat you up. Maybe an eight hour trip would be tiring but for a weekend getaway it does fine. And any road harness is forgiven once you arrive in style or hit a back road early the next morning.

One of my favorite experiences is getting off work and heading straight to the lake house. In the summer I get off the highway while it is still light and drive about 20 miles of back roads to get to the water. Normally I put the top down either at the start or at least when I get off the highway. Cruising past all the farms as the sun is setting amongst the pine trees is the perfect way to start the weekend.
