What is it? 1998 Dodge Neon Sport coupe with a 5 speed manual. The Sport trim level came with a 2.0 liter, dual overhead cam inline four-banger that put out roughly 150 ponies and 133 pound-feet of torque.

Pros: Cheap; great fuel economy; sporty-ish; great base for budget racing; every junkyard has 40 spare Neons if you need parts

Neon rear end. I know this is a sedan. But looking for pictures of a Neon is like looking for stock photos. There’s a ton out there, but all of them are just slightly wrong for what you need. Photo from autoevolution.com

Cons: Rattling noises; low torque/low-RPM acceleration; no rear legroom

Recommendation: If you are looking for economy, look no further than a 1st gen Neon. Honestly, I was stretching to find cons for this car and I would recommend it to anyone. It’s fun, reliable, and cost effective whether you want a budget racecar or just a daily driver.
