One of the most talented pianists and composers has passed away. His first solo album is on permanent rotation in the CD changer in my car and on my phone. I’ll never forget the first time I heard him playing, back in the early ‘80s. There was a local station at a community college that was a combination of NPR and jazz that played all sorts of unusual music, the more esoteric stuff you wouldn’t hear on conventional stations. That’s where I first heard As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls, an amazing 20+ minute composition that almost seems more like a story than a piece of music. I can’t find a video of it on YouTube, but I did find one of another favorite piece off of the same album called Ozark. Enjoy.
